Set off from the pier in Puntarenas in one of our comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles accompanied by your knowledgeable, bilingual guide to an area known for spotting White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, then ascend to the historical city of Esparza, founded in 1574. Continue the climb up into the hills on the Pan-American highway, passing sweeping evergreen landscapes along the way toward the eclectic yet agriculturally-based town of San Ramón where you’ll stretch your legs a bit. More beautiful landscapes await as you venture deeper into the montane tropical forest toward your final destination.
At San Luis Adventure Park, discover and capture the rich flora and fauna of this virgin forest on the hanging bridges tour. Connected by easily walkable trails, and five separate suspension bridges measuring up to 107 meters (350 feet) long and 117 meters (384 feet) high you’re given an elevated perspective of the forest. Appreciate the vitality and complexity of this environment at a relaxed pace. Although the wildlife observed here varies from day to day, visitors have observed various mammals and bird species alongside the abundant plant life, especially bromeliads, ferns, and orchids, that share this unique ecosystem.
At the end of the bridge tour, you’re invited to enter the butterfly garden. Inside an 80-square meter enclosure, observe multiple colorful species large and small like the famous Blue Morpho along with the Doris Butterfly, Swallowtails, Julias, Siproetas, and more.
After your tour, enjoy a delicious traditional Costa Rican lunch at the park’s restaurant and lastly, a visit to the hummingbird garden is not to be missed. Here several members of this exquisite bird variety can be observed. No other bird in the animal kingdom is as agile as the hummingbird and they are a joy to watch and a treat (while challenging) for the skilled photographer.
We will then say farewell to the cool mountains as we begin our descent back to the warm beach of Puntarenas.
What to bring:
● Closed-toed walking or hiking shoes, no flip flops
● Long pants, as the weather can be chilly or rainy
● Sunscreen – Even though the forest provides shade, tropical rays are strong and will find a way through.
● Repellent – The rainforest is home to insects, we are their visitors.
● Rain poncho (recommended) or rain jacket – They call it a rainforest for a reason!
● Binoculars (optional) –Your guide may spot something worth seeing high up in the trees.
● Camera - Don’t miss out on all the great photo opportunities.
● And of course, a good attitude!
